Unsure if this is a hack or just a change in advertising policy, but when I visit the site while not logged in I get very aggressive popups redirecting me to chaturbate.com on every link I click. Also the homepage now has a banner ad which looks like its been badly bodged in and broke the formatting, so it doesn't resize properly on mobile. Strangely it goes away when logged in. Never seen this before until today which is why I was wondering if its a hack?

This was a temporary glitch, advertisements do not normally display for active members.

Nothing has been compromised, the advertisements are only meant for guests and users without at least 7 posts.

The glitch may still be there. I am viewing this site on an iPad and I have a tab open for cherry.tv (which is apparently an adult website) which appeared a short time ago. 
 

I have never heard of that site until now and the tab just appeared to the left of this one. I was on furaffinity just before this and I don’t remember seeing that tab when I was on that site. The problem probably isn’t on furaffinity, though, because I closed all tabs and cleared my history before coming here. 
 

The tab seems to have appeared just as I was logging in to this site.

It would have triggered when you were signed out, that's why.

The pop-under advertisements (which are the ones that open new tabs) display at most once every 12 hours to guests. I can see about excluding the sign-in link from triggering those however, so that way you can avoid it entirely.

Our advertising partner is a reputable source and none of these advertisements should ever present a security risk to anyone even if you are signed out. They may be a nuisance, but they help us keep things running, and again the pop-under ads only display to guests.

Sidebar advertisements display if you have under 7 posts, but those are much less intruding.

Fair enough. I browse omo.org in incognito mode so always start logged out and only log in to post. So I've spent a lot of time on the site not logged in over the past few years and had never seen this until yesterday, which is what got me concerned.

I'm used to seeing the banner ads but I've never had the popups before.

No worries, I understand the concern. We've gone 10 years without relying on anything but self-hosted advertisements, but with the increasing expenses and such we've needed to try and find a balance to help keep the site afloat.

But we'll never partner with anyone that would sell ads that are malvertising or otherwise pose a security risk to anyone in the community.

If you notice any of those types of ads, just let us know and we'll make sure it's immediately addressed.

I was a little concerned myself when I saw the new ads.  I associate those types of ads with malware but I trust you to not allow any malicious ads on the site.  That being said, since the only people who see these ads are people who aren't logged in and the only people who can see this thread are people who are logged in wouldn't it be prudent to have an announcement elsewhere to reassure non-logged in users they are safe?

Hey there, I sent a (not even lewd) private video via DM and even there now a 10 second porn ad is embedded before playing the video. I believe that‘s a mistake?

And I clearly haven’t been signed out since posting it. And now I need to watch an ad first before I can see my own content? That would not be cool.

I just noticed the same thing. I am on an iPad and the login link seems to trigger this. This may also happen with the logout link (although I haven’t tried it yet today).

This is more likely to be a glitch in how the site is set up than a hack.

Yeah, I’m sometimes getting a redirect to Big Dick something-or-other (don’t pay much attention, just close it) when logging in, with the omo.org site opening logged in in a separate tab.

As noted above, those ads display when you are logged out, if you are seeing these when you sign in, that is because you are logged out, they will not appear when you are singed in.

The site allows you keep login sessions active, but if you are accessing the site from an incognito window there will be advertisements displayed until you log in again. There is no way around this at the moment.

There are substantial bandwidth and hosting costs associated with hosting video content on the site. This is no different from any other video hosting platform anywhere on the internet. When you upload your videos onto OmoOrg, we pay to store that video for you, and then we also pay for the bandwidth costs for every member that views that video.

While I understand and appreciate that advertisements are annoying, we have to find ways to sustain ourself. I think I have been extremely reasonable in our approach thus far. I am working to keep the advertisements restricted to guests and members that have not posted only. If you have to view one advertisements before you log into the site, I really don't think that's the end of the world.

There are no other adult websites of this size that run without advertisements, but we have managed to do that for over 10 years.

The video advertisements will be removed for more active members in the next update.

Yes I understand that bandwidth and hosting cost a lot of money. That’s why I support the site with my gold membership. Would really appreciate if the ads could be removed from private videos at least.

If money really becomes an issue I‘d rather suggest a fundraising campaign. I guess many users of the site would prefer that to the ads that really limit the use of it. Because now every video is nsfw any more.

on a separate note: I really appreciate how well and professionally you manage this page and the community. Absolutely high-end 👍

Sure, if that’s the aspired end state, that’s totally ok.

I wrote the original post when it was every video in the DMs every time while logged in. That seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

I've made some changes so that only topic links and file links will trigger the advertisements (and again, these should only display to guests, if you see these while you are signed in, please report it here as that is a bug).

This means even if you are in a private tab while logged out, while you may see the traditional ads in the sidebar, you will not get a pop-up or "pop-under" advertisement when trying to sign in anymore.

Video advertisements will additionally only display to guests.

Kyuu - this aggressive advertising is pretty scummy, even for unregistered users and users without very many posts it is obnoxious at best, and makes me question the security of this website at worst. 

I get that you want to make money off of this website, but force directing users to sites like chaturbate is not the way to do it. It's a real shame the direction you're going.

If you don't want to see the advertisements, you can support the site by upgrading your account or contributing content to the community.

I think I've been more than reasonable considering I supported this site at a loss out of my own pocket for the first many years it was online.

If you enjoy the community, I think it's reasonable to expect a little bit back in return, even if it's just by contributing to the site through posts, or dealing with one or two pop-ups a day and nothing more.

I've kept this site online for over 10 years. There is no other website this size in this category that has remained online so long without some type of advertising or other source of funding.
