Question about dangers of holding

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

Was a lurker of this site for a long time, now it's time to write my first post. Never wrote about those kind of things before, somehow I'm a bit nervous atm^^.

I have to tell a story about what happend on a holding-session ~10 years ago (I was around 25; Male), which honestly makes me worried. I'm NOT writing this as intention to make you arousal or something like that^^.

I love Bladder-holding here and there. Once, I held over 1.1L of Coke-Zero (confirmed by bathroom-scale before and after; normally I never push me THAT hard and never did before... mostly my Bladder holds around 500-600ml, but this time I'd push myself) for around 1-2 Hours. As I went to the toilet to finally pee, I suddenly realised, that I... simply cannot pee. I tried, but nothing comes out from my bladder. Eventually I panicked a bit (arousal was definitely gone), I didn't know what to do and after that, I thought "Damn, maybe it's the best idea to press as hard as you can...".

I remember "pressing", and my Heart quickly quickly starts to beat really, REALLY loud and "strong" in my head. I remember that a radio plays a Music in the bathroom, and my Heart pushed that loud, that I even couldn't hear the radio while my Heart was pounding. Maybe I even passed out for a fraction of a second (I'm not sure about that, because I had my eyes closed on that moment). Thank god, it only lasts for around 1 or 2 Seconds (maybe 1-2 Heartbeats) and I could pee after that, like nothing happened. My Heart quickly calms down. I was scared of what happend there, I never heard my Heart this loud in my head.

Since then: If I want to do a holding-session, I never go to a specific amount of drink (mostly 600-750ml, but never above it), because I never wanted that happen to me ever again. I still had (and have) my fetish tho...

My Question is: What happened here on that Situation? Was my Bladder about to "broke" or rupture and I got extremely lucky O_O ? Was that a "completely normal phenomen" that happens to every Peeholding-Lover (I doubt that)? Could this happened because I held too much for too long, or because of some other circuumstances I don't know?^^ I understandably won't experience this ever again if possible^^.

Thank you for every answer and thoughts that shows up here^^.

Sounds to me like acute urinary retention.

Worse thing to do is actually press your bladder was that'll increase the pressure to the muscles. Cliched as it sounds, it's recommended to turn on the tap to help your bladder relax. Or bath/shower in warm water. I'm no Doctor so best to seek real medical advice.

I’ve heard of people not being able to release when extremely full, it’s probably quite rare that a damaging outcome would result but not something you’d want to go to A&E with, expecially in the current situation!

If you don’t tend to have accidents/leaks when desperate you just don’t quite know if your bladder has that failsafe mechanism, which is a reason to be cautious on extreme holding.

It could have been muscular, or your bladder may have been resting heavily enough on the rest of your pelvic anatomy to put a kink in your urethra.

This is more common in men (and non-men who were born male.) The long, thin male urethra is more pinchable.

Stories of men actually needing to be catheterized for this tend to involve them being seated in one position for a long time - slot machines, airplanes. Therefore, if you plan to hold a lot, also plan to move around a lot. Maybe choose moderation if you want to mix omorashi and bondage.

While I've never had this happen to me, I did have kidney stones when I was about 20. Ever since then, because I know holding for long periods of time can be bad with respect to kidney stone development, my brain kind of takes over and that's normally when I "have an accident". It's not that I'm at bursting point, but it's just my brain saying "fuck getting kidney stones again, just piss yourself!". So thankfully, I don't think I'll ever get myself to the state you mentioned here

I don't know how true it is, but when my brother and I were little my mom would warn us that if we held for too long our bladders would shrink, which I now assume means they would remain the same size but wouldn't be able to retain the same capacity as before.

Isn’t it the opposite, if you go too often your bladder will shrink (in terms of functional capacity/ability to hold, at least…)

Holding too long on a regular basis is more likely to stretch the bladder, which will increase capacity but also carries risk of causing other dysfunctions e.g. retention, leakage, UTIs etc.

Already many years ago I started to train my bladder by always putting off peeing until the very last second. This meant reducing peeing to in between once and twice a day regularly. For weeks in a row I always waited until I could not stand the urge anymore. So I did definitely not only learn to tolerate a full bladder for hours but enlarge or even double my capacity.

I’ve heard of a very few cases in which people doing deliberate holds reported that after a certain point of great urgency the bladder became numb and paralyzed. These people did the essential thing and went to an ER for catheterization. I have also heard that the Las Vegas  and other casino adjacent ERs do frequent emergency urinary catheterizations but my recent web searches have not revealed any information.

Infants have no control of the external sphincter. Potty training is training for a result, not training for a mechanism, and I suspect different people achieve control of that external sphincter in different ways. Also, there are several different types of sensors of bladder pressure and there are probably differences in the threshold pressures that trigger and respond to the sensations. Hence different people have different abilities to do extreme holds.

In on case I know well, me, if I held long enough I lost control (and the loss of control was the most amazingly pleasurable feelings I ever experienced). Then I suffered a spinal cord injury. For the first 5 1/2 weeks I was totally unable to empty my bladder in any way other than by the use of a catheter. Then a serious uti occurred and bladder emptying was not voluntary. (I did not feel any pain which indicated the pain sensation pathway was abolished). Once the uti was cleared up my brain would get signals interpreted as get to a toilet RIGHT NOW. What the signals really meant was go change your wet pants now. I eventually lost even that sensation. 16 months after the injury my bladder started emptying at a volume of 600 mL. That volume gradually increased and I tracked the residual volume, the volume left before using the catheter. That volume gradually increased. For a while the volume removed by the catheter seldom exceeded 750 mL because any volume above that had been involuntary and unconsciously expelled, I.e. wet diaper. Now there are time when the volume removed by the catheter exceeds 1200 mL, the maximum volume my intermittent catheter collection bag can contain. There are times when I discover I have a wet diaper and the residual volume is around 1200 mL. Make no mistake, the involuntary expulsion of urine is a safety valve release that preserves my kidney function.

Backup of urine into kidneys is very dangerous and can lead to permanent kidney damage. For those who don’t know, kidney damage can be managed by spending 3 days a week hooked up to a kidney dialysis machine. One rare consequence of COVID infection is kidney failure.

It’s pretty common for people to have some difficulty emptying an extremely distended bladder. More common than not being able to start is not being able to empty completely. Most recreational holders just kinda have their way of dealing with it but it’s certainly possible to end up in acute retention and having to get cathed.

in general I’d worry about your kidneys over your bladder, though. Bladder rupture is rare and usually happens after a physical impact or in people with existing damage from radiation or surgery. There are exceptions (idiopathic/spontaneous cases) but more to the point in 15+ years on fetish forums I’ve never once heard of it happening in this “hobby” and someone would know if it did! The kidneys, on the other hand, while they have some built in protection, are somewhat delicate and not something you want to lose. And you wouldn’t necessarily know anything was wrong until substantial damage had been incurred.

Same here; I passed one on Sunday that reminded me of a coffee bean in terms of color, shape, and possibly size. I was in the ER and then a hospital room for it back in February. The hospital stay was about two days.

I was working on improving my bladder capacity (in preparation for a long job-related proctored computer exam with no bathroom breaks) before this and I can’t help thinking there might be a link.

I think I’ll just wear good quality adult diapers with a booster in situations where a rest room might not be readily available for at least two hours instead.
