Why I don't buy "porn" videos

Recommended Posts

I've purchased porn videos on three separate occasions. They were all years back now, but the first was a month membership for IN2P. The second time was through B2B's file host (Dreamhost or Dreamaker, something like that at the time). And the third was through clips for sale. I didn't buy one clip each time. I would wait a while until there were a good number that I liked and then purchase them all at once.

Anyway, after all three of these separate ventures, within a week, my credit card details had been stolen. My details have never been stolen other than these three times where I used them to acquire shady material. I know some people will just say it's coincidence, but I don't think so. Basically just posting to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing. After the third time I decided I was done until there's a more secure/better way to do it.

Never tried to purchase porn; slightly innocent in that I didn't know you could O.O

My credit card details were stolen through iTunes once, though. Money was lost as well as my songs. A Chinese pirate had downloaded Chinese songs onto my iPod. I once had to help my father who lost £1000 when his card was stolen from a fairly innocent site - think it was groceries!

So it's hard to say, because your credit card can be stolen in so many mundane, everyday situations that, yeah, it may just be a huge coincidence. Maybe buying clips in bulk is an issue - perhaps in some way it makes your movements more noticeable on the site and so they target you quicker/easier whereas if you slowly built up a clip collection say, over a month or two you may be less noticed?

Tough one, sorry for my awful advice, but you have my sympathies!

I'm surprised at reading about all those cases. I always thought having your credit card stolen was a very remote possibility. Still I wonder how often it is due to server side security and not a virus on your own PC, since porn sites (specially the shoddy ones) are a common source of infection.

I use my credit card to buy stuff of the internet at least two or three times a week, and never had such problems. But I avoid sites that make the transaction directly, I try to use paypal, google wallet, or other centralized payment systems whenever possible. Once I also bought a prepaid credit card using my paypal account when I wanted to buy something from a site I didn't trust (I paid 25$ for a 20$ card... but for larger amounts it becomes relatively cheaper). Another simple thing to do is running a virtual machine with linux where you can do your credit card shopping without having to worry so much about client side vulnerabilities (I actually do the opposite, keep the safe stuff in my windows PC and use the linux machine for accessing porn sites and downloading suspicious stuff, but that can be slow if you don't have a lot of RAM).

Finally, the last credit card I got has a very different security system in which after I input the details on a site for the first time it redirects me to the card issuer page with the details of the payee and it only authorizes the transaction after I type my "internet shopping password" (different from the card pin code). No idea how or if that works with any sites though.

I don't shop online a whole lot, but with each passing year, it becomes harder and harder to avoid. I like to think of myself as an all cash business, its just so much easier. I do have a bank account but have never so much as considered getting an ATM card or a credit card.

Those Vanilla Visa gift cards are a godsend when you do need to purchase something online. As julessh88 said you do have to pay a small service charge but it is well worth it for the peace of mind. I've even used them on some fairly shady sites and never had an issue and even if the card information was stolen I wouldn't be losing that much.

That's not to say that the cards I have used in the past haven't been stolen, but I usually clear a card all at once or within a few minutes. If you leave money on the card for a long time after a purchase you might find it missing, but I've never had this problem.
