And that's Ace Attorney Investigations 2 finished. It's...a bit of a difficult one, because it should be excellent. The story is memorable, the characters are great, the twist is extremely effective, there's a lot of fine detail, and all the cases are connected together well, better than the first Investigations. And the soundtrack rips. For a series almost completely about story, that should make it a slam dunk.

However, Ace Attorney is not a pure visual novel, there is gameplay, and that's where this game fails. Much like Justice for All, Investigations 2 is just very unclear about its direction, and figuring out the correct solution can be an arduous process. Sometimes the connection is tenuous, sometimes multiple lines of the testimony can all be valid points to object to, sometimes the choice of one piece of evidence over another is splitting hairs, sometimes the game outright misleads you, and sometimes the player has to ignore a crucial detail when making a point just so the opposition can then say "oh, but you forgot about this detail, so your logic is flawed!" It's probably the worst in the series on that clarity front. I don't want to blame the fan translation, because while I have no evidence to support it, it feels like an excellent translation that wouldn't mess up something like that. That's not to say the translation doesn't have faults of its own (a few bugs, some inconsistencies in presentation, bad audio mixing on the new voice clips), though I'm still playing the first release of the full game and not any updates, so I don't know. Oh yeah, and while Investigations 1 gets a bad rep for the length of its final case, Investigations 2 is worse. Both cases 3 and 5 are too long.

However, its strengths do carry it a long way, so while I didn't think too much of it on my first playthrough, I respect it a lot more now. It's a strong contender, and the characters go a long way to making that. It does fall victim to a usual Ace Attorney problem of bringing back old characters that don't need to return (we didn't need Larry again), the new major ones are good. Dan Avidan Ray Shields is a fun support, Sebastian Debeste has one of the best arcs in the series and needs to return in a future game, and Justine Courtney has surprising depths. And surprising "visible aspects".

But, where does Kay fall on the character spectrum, I know you expect me to question. Well...it's complicated. Case 4 is her defining moment where there's a chance for some real deep psychoanalysis into her character, but it's only a possibility and is never stated to be fact. How much is her true nature, how much of her usual self is directly derived from previous experiences? Well, I don't know, but my gut tells me that, outside that case, they made Kay a bit goofier. If they acknowledged that she was just messing around with Edgeworth, I'd get it, but that rarely, if ever, is made clear. It feels more like "hey, Kay is just this game's Maya, Maya made a lot of nonsensical quips, Kay should do that too". Well, I like Kay more than Maya because she's usually on-the-level, so bringing the two closer together by bringing Kay down is...sad.

r/anime finishes their Gurren Lagann rewatch. It's just so fun to watch newcomers experience my favorite show, see their thoughts as events unfold, see the conclusions they come to, and inevitably see the beauty and genius behind Gurren Lagann. On my birthday, there's very little else in the world more precious. Aside from receiving this as a present.

I saw a surprising number of people on Team Nia this time around. Glad this generation finally has taste.

The next trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3's DLC, Re:Mind, leaked last night. It's since been put back on private, but enough people have seen it and reuploaded it that its contents are laid bare for all to see. And there's some pretty exciting stuff. First off, for PS4 players, it releases January 23rd, which puts in that exact same week I've been talking about with The Alliance Alive HD Remastered PC, Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, and the original release date for Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. A lot of people are talking about March being busy with Doom Eternal, The Last of Us Part 2, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Persona 5 Royal, I want to know what is up with this one week in January that appeals to me so heavily?

Aside from that, Final Fantasy characters are back (no confirmation on Cloud/Sephiroth, but the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee is back), playable Kairi, what looks to be post-game story content, Yozora in the flesh, and the return of the Heartless Swarm, the most overused boss in Kingdom Hearts history (3 times in 0.2, at least twice in 3) EXCEPT THE HEARTLESS ARE ALL A SWARM OF ANTI-AQUAS. Ooh baby.

I still don't know what took it so long (I know there was a movie kind of thing in between), but it's now confirmed that Re:Zero Season 2 is coming Spring 2020. That's gonna be weird, with Isekai Quartet in January, getting to see Subaru and Kazuma be bros again, only to be immediately followed by Subaru suffering. The only saving grace is three cours in a row of EMT.

PornHub's released their 2019 Year in Review. There's a lot of statistics there, but the only part I'm particularly interested in is the breakdown on which video game characters were the most searched. The percentage change from the previous year is also fascinating, and theorizing why that is (Bowsette still ranked despite losing considerable share due to age, Jade and Sonya Blade got bumps thanks to Mortal Kombat 11, Kingdom Hearts III provided a sizable boost to Aqua, I have no idea why Nina Williams of Tekken enjoyed a tenfold increase). But in any case, the winner of 2019's searches was...Princess Zelda!

She's ranked every year since 2016, when PornHub started ranking game character searches, but this was her first time reaching first place. I can only assume that, even with the Breath of the Wild boost, she missed the top 2017 spot because Overwatch was still new (top 3 in 2017 was all Overwatch). So, why did she win 2019? Well, this is only speculation, but I imagine the waning popularity of Overwatch helped, as did the whole "Breath of the Wild 2 being one of the most talked about games at E3 2019".

Tonight's the Game Awards, maybe something new will give her another giant upshot.

Finished Devil May Cry 5. Ooh, it's a good one. Combat is fast and satisfying, the difficulty is suitably but not overwhelmingly challenging, there's plenty of options and skill, the style is real, it's all what Devil May Cry should be. But is it the best in the series? ...no, I wouldn't quite go that far. Without a doubt, Dante is at his best playing in this game, but he's not the only one. Nero is better than in 4, but still feels limited. V is different, but less exciting. I miss the days when all the combat could be tuned to its one character, its best character. Thankfully, Dante almost completely takes over the second half, but I'd like to play the entire game as him. For that reason, despite being more limited in combat options and having some real annoying bosses, I would still call Devil May Cry 3 the best in the series. Though, 5 is close, don't get me wrong.

Another point 3 has over 5 is Lady. I'm glad she's back to a 3-like design (never liked her super-sexy 4 look), but she doesn't really do anything in 5. She was so cool in 3. All 5 has to offer for her is, even if it's covered by a lens flare, her bare ass and confirmation that her body is still Smokin' Sexy Style.
