i bought a bunch of parts on fleabay, and put this together myself. it sounds amazing, too bad i'm not a better player. but i consider her a work of art...

i built another one: this is what she sounds like : https://soundcloud.com/frostyjr2/nuages-improv

Well, 'assemble' is probably more appropriate... telecaster style guitars are kind of like Legos, really. Apart from the wiring, they aren't too difficult to put together. Thanks for the compliment,

Sober design, is it a simple mic or a humbunker ? Nice guitar ^^

it's a humbucker, but even tho' there's only one pickup, it's got a switch to go from full on humbucking mode to

out of phase single coils. kind of like the 'in between' positions on a strat.

we call her "La Diablita" ... she goes from all sweet to snarling like a junkyard doggie ! :)

do you play also ?

thanks for checking my guitar out, & for your kind words.

the plushie is a webkinz signature lying beagle (altho' mine always tells the truth, LOL).

the plushie & the real doggie are always with me at bed time.

i play the guitar every chance i get, altho lately i've been spending time i could be practicing

hanging out here instead. maybe i should reconsider my priorities... ;)

thanks for the words of encouragement, adamu-kun !

Thanks for the compliment, though. She is a bit of a looker, i agree !

Do you play acoustic, electric, or both ?

Nice Telecaster, is this Squier or Fender?

Thanks for the compliments, people !

'La Diablita' is my version of a Fender Esquire (only one pickup; Teles have two)

She's a partscaster, but almost all Fender (not Squier) parts with a couple of exceptions.

50's one piece ash body (light weight), Baja tele maple neck w/ 9.5" fingerboard radius,

kluson vintage tuners, vintage ashtray bridge with wilkinson compensated brass saddles,

and an aftermarket bakelite pickguard. electrosocket, seymour duncan hot rails aftermarket pickup,

and a custom wiring scheme (pos. 3 full humbucking mode, center off, pos. 1 split coil for low output trad fender sound.)

i put her together myself...

you can't buy anything like this from FMIC,

unless you spend over $3K on a Custom Shop model.

and yes, i am a total gearhead and nerd, LOL !

I'm just starting a "Specialist Interest Project" in college, and I've decided I'm going to make my own guitar. I mean actually carve the body and neck myself too. Fret placement will be hard I think :P

Anyway, for now, here are a couple of my guitars:

This is an Ibanez Gio series, and is incredibly nice to play.

And this is a Crafter DE7/N, my main acoustic.

I do have a few more, but I don't wanna spam this thread with my pictures :P

I'm following you on Soundcloud. >:D

I'm considering trying to assemble some of my own guitars (and maybe other instruments) but I'm afraid that it'll cost way much more than a ready-to-play one... Is that mostly the case? In other words, have any advice on how I should go about doing the same? I'm on a limited budget and can't even afford 80% of the guitars I find.

Spam away, Pants ! i like the GIO...

fret placement is all math... figure out what scale length you want, then use this:

http://www.stewmac.com/fretcalculator?gclid=CNyUp4byiLoCFUyd4AodQHcAkA

All other things being equal, the longer the scale length, the more tension on the strings,

and the stiffer the guitar will feel (harder to bend the strings)

Gibsons are usually 24.75 inch scale length

Danelectros, Paul Reed Smiths and a few others use a 25 inch scale length,

and Fenders are 25.5 inches.

Thanks for following me, i appreciate it !

If you assemble your own guitars, you can  put together something decent for not too much money.

i use fairly high-end parts myself, because i want guitars that compete with fender custom shop ones...

for lower end stuff, it won't be a huge savings on the price, it's more for the fun of it and being able to say you built it yourself.

and what you'll end up with will be better quality for just about the same price.

here's a low end Fender Affinity strat, $180 shipped:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Squier-Affinity-HSS-Stratocaster-Olympic-White-/141023475484?pt=Guitar&hash=item20d5a7771c 9the

it looks OK, but electronics will be crappy, the neck and frets will be rubbish, the tuners will be cheap and tend to slip out of tune..

not anything you'd want to play or listen to, really. at least not imo...

i'd take about $50 more, and build this instead:

body, $60 + $15 shipping    http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOADED-Squier-Bullet-by-Fender-Fat-Stratocaster-Strat-BODY-Guitar-VS-Sunburst-/251354617617?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3a85e71711

neck, $105    http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Fender-Lic-Maple-Stratocaster-Strat-NECK-Jumbo-Frets-Mighty-Mite-MM2928-/360453375321?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item53ecb20559   (spend the $ here, it's the heart of the guitar)

tuners, $25   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Vintage-Tuners-RH-Strat-Tele-Nickel-With-Bushings-Screws-Brand-New-/230961963373?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item35c667e16d

3 sets of light gauge strings, $12   http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Pack-Ernie-Ball-2223-Super-Slinky-Electric-Guitar-Strings-Custom-Gauge-9-42-/370669481438?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item564d9f6dde

voila, a pretty darn decent guitar with 2 extra sets of strings for under $230,

and the satisfaction of having put it together yourself...

you don't even have to buy all the parts at once, you can space the purchases out over weeks or months !

you'll need some decent screwdrivers, some small allen wrenches, and maybe a nice rubber jawed clamp to keep the neck tight to the body when you join the two of them. if you're really going to do this, let me know and i'll be glad to help with any info and tips, OK ?

Okay cool, so in addition to the two I posted before, I also have:

This Ibanez bass (which is also a gio... you said you liked the first one so here ya go :P)

post-4159-0-58913900-1381317598_thumb.jp

Yep, it's a 5 string. Because METAL.

And behold this old Hohner. First guitar I ever owned, it watches over my room from atop the closet :P

post-4159-0-19919800-1381317711_thumb.jp

It looks weird because I took the picture at an angle, plus the guitar is slanted backwards. Ah well.

Hope you like ^.^

I'm exercising my DIY ethics by going completely solo in making music, and now making instruments >:D any tips would definitely help so I don't get robbed of my little amount of money
