Tumblr Rant?

Recommended Posts

So I know the Tumblr crisis is behind us... I finally revisited my blog after staying away from it since the Purge, and I'm confused and angry and wanted to rant.

So for those who don't know my tumblr, where have you been?

https://lilbabyrachel.tumblr.com/

ut well it shares pictures of cute people in diaper, people wetting themselves, and that's basically it. Some of those posts include me. And well, basically all of them were flagged as adult content. But I tell you *gestures to exhibit 1* how is this adult content:

It is obvious that this little girl has had an accident in her panties. There is absolutely nothing adult about that! Quite the opposite.

And how about exhibit 2 *gestures with caveat adding that this isn't me, unlike exhibit 1*

Tmbv1.png

What is sexual or adult about this? This adorable girl in a vintage 1998 Goodnite (my favourite) is fully clothed, there's nothing sexual about it one bit.

Argh!!!!

It's also very random, these are some screenshots of my Tumblr's archive, as you can see there's still a ton of diaper and age play content, but some has been removed:

It's almost like Tumblr has purged everything but the cute waistband shots I love and like other random pictures. But what flag a picture of someone posing in a 1998 Goodnite but not a 2016 Goodnite? Or panties or training pants?

So I've appealed like 200 posts randomly from my collection of about 14,000 posts because fuck Tumblr, but it has led me to muse about some of the following.

When you appeal, a little box pops up and says:

So I'm thinking...

1) There's like a team of people who are getting paid to look at kinky porn all day and determine if it's pornographic or not.

a) How in the hell does someone get a job like this?

b) How in the hell does someone keep a job like this?

2) And this is a more serious question, if I do flag tons of my own posts for review, does this risk them being attracted to my content and thereby flagging more posts that they otherwise would not flag? In vengefully flagging content for Tumblr, am I depriving the world of porn?

3) Are there any stats or studies on the number of posts that have been appealed and does this like cost Tumblr money? And if so, how much money? Because I've got 14,000 posts I'm happy to appeal as a fuck you to Tumblr.

Asking for a friend ?

Tumblr probably posted open moderation positions and people applied.  Looks like this position.  I don't know why you need a BA / BS for it, but other than that, there's nothing really strange; I'm not sure what you mean by (b).

This seems possible, though not on a per-post basis.  The most likely scenario I see is that instead of classifying you as "fetish", they notice your Tumblr is mixed between "sexual material" and "pictures of little girls" and flag the whole thing as child porn.  If your argument for keeping the photos up is that they're pictures of children, then this might bite you back.  I know (or, at least, sincerely hope) that everything you have is from consenting 18+ models, but I wouldn't relish the prospect of explaining "Your Honour, when I said "there is nothing adult about that", I meant purely that there is no inherent sexuality depicted, and "little girl" is merely a figure of speech."

That said, Tumblr's sexual content policy is in your favour here.  Looking at their guidelines, their definition of "adult content" is essentially "real-life content depicting genitals or nipples, and any content depicting sex acts."  With that definition, your photos are fine.  I actually think it's really progressive of Tumblr to define adult content so narrowly—I had been pretty sure they wanted a blanket ban.  However, there is also a "harm to minors" guideline which prohibits anything sexually suggestive when it involves a minor.

I don't know about stats, but you can put a lower bound on the cost estimate: if they've got people actually looking at these pictures, the average time will be at least a few seconds per image.  At minimum wage (which I suspect this isn't), that would translate to something around $0.50-$1.00 per image.

So, TL;DR: You are formally correct, but be careful what you wish for.

c) How in the hell does someone enjoy a job like this? I mean, a job is supposed to give you either money or satisfaction - preferably both, but I doubt that it's a paying job.

The Guardian had an article on the life Facebook moderators.  Knowing their other tech articles, it's likely a skewed view, but no, this isn't the kind of job people enjoy.

You would be surprised about some jobs... I watched a video about a woman who currently makes living on writing captions for professional Pornhub videos. For her it's just a job, she doesn't particularly loves or hates it, but it's a paying job she works full time at.
