Jane Jones 314
So I just wanted to know if there are any site rules on fans of particular stories carrying them on after they're essentially "dead" and the author/s have stopped updating them? Is that against the rules or not? For example, if someone wanted to carry on "The Prodigal Princess" or "Master and Servant", is that allowed? Say for instance if for a story like that, someone titled a new chapter/part: "Master And Servant - Fan Continuation" and then wrote several of their own additional chapters. Is that okay? Yay or nay? Quote Link to comment
Ondinist 144
It seems OK to me as long as it is clear that the new story is by a different author. Think of the James Bond stories that have been published by various authors after Ian Fleming's death. Jane Jones and Bismiris 2 Quote Link to comment
BENAir01 601
I think it's a nay unless you get explicit permission from the original author. Or maybe you could start a new thread and call it "My continuation of..." and put disclaimers etc. Jane Jones and Bismiris 2 Quote Link to comment
Drakon 114
I think the best option would be simply to ask the author of the story you want to continue. Quote Link to comment
DsGSilver 782
I guess fanfiction of fanfiction is still fanfiction, and probably technically allowed (Don't quote me on that, I'm not actually sure). I would say to try and contact the author to see how they feel about it, and if they give the go-ahead, still make sure to explicitly credit them. Jane Jones 1 Quote Link to comment
SJC Omorashi 1,550
In my opinion, it seems ok to do this as long as you give the author credit. Jane Jones 1 Quote Link to comment
WetDave 650
Personally, I would attempt to get permission from the original author if possible - not because I think it’s a “must”, just that it would be polite and good manners to do so. Otherwise I would do as suggested above. Create a new thread making it clear that it is based on or a continuation of another author’s work with a link to the original story. Not sure what the rules are but I think this would be good practice and that no reasonable person would be too upset if you did this. Jane Jones and BENAir01 2 Quote Link to comment
desperatewet 152
Try to ask the author. Quote Link to comment
vfbbf 108
I have infact done something like this before with a desperate day for Rey. I would recommend permission from the author and cleary mark its not the original author. Quote Link to comment

Darksyn 266
I'd label it as 'inspired by [story name], which was written by [author name]' It's kinda like a creative commons license, particularly the variant that requires attribution to the creators of the original. Blackheart 200
I could prolly put out a new chapter of the Prodigal Princess if people are interested. ? That said, if you wanna write in the world, go for it. Edited September 23, 2018 by Blackheart (see edit history) Jane Jones 1 Quote Link to comment
