Front wheel or all wheel drive?

I went with Front Wheel. The all-wheel drive variant has issues with the Holden Transmission. They call it XWD (Cross Wheel Drive). The only thing that disappoints in the Saab is the sound system could use a nice upgrade. I'm talking paper pinoeer speakers but everything is just fantastic wife already got a ticket. she was in a very conservative part of the state and I said sweetheart in Ottawa county where I grew up they come down on speeders hard it's not a  suggestion there. I grew up in a really conservative Dutch-American community they don't tolerate individualism lol. I love it just need to put about a 120 into new speakers I like the stereo the aux is receptive, the tuner is okay... but the paper pioneer speakers need to be replaced. Smoothest ride I ever drove and I drove a 2017 Infiniti SUV.

PWG I wanted to ask you one question. I see you love Crown Vics and Ford... but I had a horrid experience with a 1998 Escort when I was a teen.... I know they make Volvos and collaborate with Mazda which are really cool cars... I've just been so afraid to touch them. Tell me why I'm a complete idiot.

In many countries, manual is still considered the default, while automatic is an upgrade. I've never actually driven an automatic! My daily driver, the van I use for work ('08 Ford Transit, 1.8

Nice. I just really like diesel trucks for some reason haha

Probably the best car I've ever owned was an old Saab 900S convertible. Big old lump, but totally bulletproof. Other than servicing, it didn't cost me a penny in repairs/maintenance. Then I fooli

Don’t get me wrong, the 02 Crown Vic was absolute trash. Car was a mystery.  Constant issues that were incredibly hard to trace down.   Long story short it wasn’t until my 2000 and 2007 did I find cars that weren’t total beat horses.   Even then I had the EGR valve went out in the 2000 today and that was suck.

Anyways the newer Volvo’s are different compared to the older ones imo. If I was gonna get a Volvo I’d be tracking down a 240. Those things are oddly satisfying.

As as far as Mazda. I’m a fan of the Miata. Even if it’s an underpowered two seater. I’m also a pretty decent fan of the rotary variants. RX7s are nice but hard to come by in decent shape. RX8s are. Not bad but not as good as the 7. Thought about looking for older roataries too.

But tbh I can see how  bad experience could turn you away from car companies. I won’t touch another Saturn for instance because I had one crap out under the 100k mi mark. Ridiculous.

My Ideal vehicle is one that would be totalled by insurance if the Radio was stolen.

Lessee, current car is a 1997 VW Cabrio, White with black roof.  5-speed, Engine slightly warmed, larger (15") wheels.  Bought it as a wreck in January 2017, had 51,000 miles.  Now it has 82,000 miles.

Before that it was a 1998 VW Cabrio, 5 speed.  Bought it after a tree fell on the previous one.  Drove it from August 2009 (Thanks, Hurricane/Tropical storm Irene!) thru Jan 2017.  It rusted to bits.  Took it from 108,000 to 237,000 miles.

The one that Irene got was a 1995 VW Cabrio, 5 speed.  Anyone see a trend?  Bought in 2005, took it from 122,000 through 309,000 miles.

Previous?  2002 VW Cabrio, 5 speed, bought in January 2004.  Hopefully the last car I'll ever take out a loan for.  Not a good experience.

Before that?  1987 VW Cabriolet, 5 speed.  Drove it from August 1996 through January 2004.  About 180,000 miles over that time.  Rusted to death.

Bought a 2000 Cabrio for my daughter in 2010.  It was also a wreck, and still driven daily.  All 3 kids learned to drive on that one...

Got my first VW, a 1955 Beetle in 1974, when I was 15...

I used to work as a mechanic, and had a blast maintaining my own fleet for years... not so much these days.

Peace,

Derek

Boy howdy I don't know how I missed this thread. As it turns out, I'm a mechanic and I really love talking about my vehis.

My pride and joy is a '99 1 ton Dodge truck with a Cummins. 4 wheel drive, dually, and a manual transmission. I bought it from the original owner in 2008 with 89,000 miles on it. It currently has 834,000 miles. Yes you read that right. When I bought it, it was bone stock except a tractor air filter (bhaf mod), exhaust brake, airbags, and a goose neck hitch. I added onboard air and a toolbox/transfer tank combo and left it alone until it was just shy of 500k. I was hauling our skid steer on a trailer when 5th gear fell off about 100 miles from the shop. I limped it in 4th and was less than a mile away when the injection pump died. Both weak points on that truck at basically the same time. So I decided it was time for some r&r.

Built a custom mid arm 4 link with Jonny joints at the axle and polyurethane bushings at the frame. Custom track bar to fix the flimsy one it came from the factory with. Carli coils and fox shocks. Flipped the shackle on the rear leaf springs and pulled the overloads. Don't need them I have airbags. This lifted it about 3 inches. 305 tires and a custom front bumper with a 15,000lb warn winch.

Then for the engine I installed head studs, Bosch rv275 injectors, new vp44, water/meth injection, and a k27 turbo waste gated at 24lb of boost. It had a fass lift pump on it and I switched to a glacier diesel mechanical. Highly recommend it. I ran a smarty until about 2 months ago I switched to a quadzilla. Never turned either one up over the 50 horse tune. It dyno'd at 285 horse power and 613 lb-ft at the wheels 2 weeks ago. Nothing inside the engine has ever been touched and it has over 800k on it. At least a third of those miles towing.

Rather than rebuild the nv4500 and keep the nv241 I stuck a g56/nv271 combo in with a South bend organic clutch. Smooth engagement and it holds up to towing very well.

Haven't really had any issues since then. Normal wear and tear because it's a work truck. Plenty of dents and chipped paint. I have a built motor sitting in the shop, but I was waiting for this one to die. As it approached a million miles I decided I didn't want to put a $20k motor in a beat truck so I grabbed a 3rd one out of a rolled truck. It's got 217k on it. When mine dies I'm just gunna stick it in there.

My built Cummins started as a 5.9 but it's bored 30 over with a 6.7 crank. P7100 with 175hp injectors. he351/k31 twin turbos. Head studded and o ringed. Dyno'd at 545hp and 1240 lb-ft at the crank. I'm thinking about finding a late 70s Chevy truck to stick it in.

I also have a 97 Chevy k2500. Yanked the 350 and stuck an all aluminum LS6 with a mild comp cam in it. Set a holley 850 on top of a dual plane manifold and backed it with a full manual valve body 4l80. Dyno'd at 390 horse power to the wheels. Cranked the torsion bars, fox shocks, and 285 tires. It's 4wd and I took the gov lock out and replaced it with arb air locker. The bed was smashed up when I bought it so I put a flat bed on it. It drives better in the snow than my dually so it gets driven more in the winter.

I have an 01 Jeep Cherokee xj. Long arm 3 link front, 56" chevy leaf springs in the rear. Dana 60/14 bolt axles and a 231/300 double transfercase with a 4:1 set of gears in the 300. 5.13 gears and lockers in both axles. It's on 39 inch tires. Full roll cage, 5 point harnesses in all 4 seats, and standard unibody stiffening. Great off road rig.

My grocery getter is an 09 Subaru outback. Done nothing but change the oil and replace the water pump and serpentine belt. Been flawless for 3 years now.

And as of yesterday I own a 91 mustang fox body. Previous owner started building it into a drag racing car. Sold it to me with no motor or trans, but it's already caged and has a 9 inch rear, 4 link on coil overs, and a set of 32 inch slicks. Bought a 302/t5 combo I built for a friend a year ago. It's got dart heads, a huge cam, single plane manifold and a Holley double pumper. Runs awesome. He's stepping up to a 408 in his car. I will eventually but I don't have much racing experience so I want to get the hang of it with the 302 before I throw a 500 horse small block in it. Who knows, maybe turbo LS in the distant future? Stay tuned;)

Also have a Polaris rmk snow machine, Suzuki rs600 street bike, and a Honda crf450 dirt bike.

Fuck yeah Fox Body. They’re cool but overpriced where I live. Is the rear a true 9 or is it the 8.8? 8.8s aren’t bad rear ends. What my Vic has stock. LS swapping has been discussed in one of our Crown Vic’s as well. Just to make the world hate us.

It's a 9 inch. I'm not positive but I think it's a Currie. Already 4 linked on coilovers. It has 4.57 gears in it now but I think they're going to be too short for the 5 speed in gonna put in. Probably switch to 3.70s. it's a complete drag car, just need a motor and trans. Pretty excited I've never owned anything fast lol

I dunno what I'll be driving. I've mainly been taking taxi services wherever I go and haven't really gotten a job yet. Here's a list of possible cars I'll drive when I get some money scooped up, though.

1. 1997 Volvo 850R Turbo Stationwagon

2. 2006-2008 Dodge Charger SXT

3. 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel

4. 2007 Ford Focus RS

Those are just the 4 cars I'm looking into getting when I get a job. It'll most likely be either the Charger or the 850R, but who knows lol. I'll post if and when I do get a car. :3

As someone that owns a Cummins don't get one if you don't plan to tow heavy with it. Really expensive to maintain. I love my truck, owned it for years, but I never would've bought it off I didn't need it, and that's why I own a car too. Full-size trucks are not good daily drivers. Difficult to park, expensive, and they ride really rough.

With a truck like a Cummins, it gets you what you need when you need it. You just need to take good care of it and make sure they do well. My dad owns a 99 3500 and I dunno about you, but I think it rides great. And the 2500 is smaller so shouldn't be that hard to park depending on the package you get. I dunno yet tho.

Low key Nikki I would've suggested a Charger SXT.  Sure its a 250hp V6, but it makes as much power as my Crown Vic 1 liter less and 2 cylinders less.  Probably similar mileage.  Been thinking about getting an ex-Police Charger if I can track down a decent one.  I'd settle for a 3.5L V6 but prefer a 5.7L V8 model.

^ Oouuf.  See, I'm sort of divided on the discussion of timing belts/cambelts and timing chains.  My Vic uses a timing chain setup which in general lasts hundreds of thousands of miles if they're taken care of.  That being said, Ford has cheaped out on some model years and went with a softer nylon that wears much faster than its previous version.  Those will eat the timing chain guides and eventually FUBAR the timing chain system.  Its either an expensive (for a shop) or time intensive and labor intensive (for yourself) job to do this.  TBH if that happens to my Vic I'll more than likely swap an entire engine into it instead.  As far as belts, I see them as easier to maintain and operate, but obviously when the belt gives up the ghost, you have a car that's toast.

Anyways just some ramblings of mine.
