PPP 1,307
Jackson waited with bated breath. “All right,” said Miller. “You can join our squad. But you have to swear never to turn on us. If you try to betray us, I won’t hesitate to shoot you.” “Fine,” growled Jackson. “I swear it.” He was starting to wonder if this was all worth it. Still, it wasn’t like he had any other job offers lined up… “Let’s get back to the safe zone,” David suggested. “It’s late and we could use some rest.” The next morning, over breakfast, Anne brought up something that Jackson had been worrying about himself. “Now that there are five of us, the money’s gonna be spread even thinner. We’ll have to take on more jobs.” “You’re right,” said Miller. “Hm, looks likes there’s only one posted right now.” “‘Dragonslayer?’” Anne read off the paper. “What the fuck?” “It’s probably just some jackass with a flamethrower,” said Jackson. “Should be easy.” Mission auto-selected: Dragonslayer P.O.V character: Miller Difficulty: Unknown Details: Take out the “dragon” that’s terrorizing the small valley community northeast of here. [P.O.V: Miller] Miller took another look at the job offering and frowned. “It’s a ways to the village. We should get going right away.” Sure enough, night seemed to fall before they knew it. The moon was high in the sky by the time the jeep pulled up to the village, a ramshackle collection of mostly tin shacks. An old woman with long white hair stood outside the nearest one. “Oh, thank heavens,” she said in a raspy voice. “Are you here about the dragon?” “Er, yeah,” Miller replied. “So what can you tell us about this ‘dragon?’” “It is a horrid beast that attacks without warning or reason,” the old woman explained. “It will raze our buildings and devour our people before retreating to its lair.” Miller was silent. What the hell is this thing? he wondered. “The dragon attacked a few days ago,” the old woman continued, “so it should be resting now. It’s the perfect time for you to slay it!” “Wait a minute,” said Eve. “If we do it now, we would effectively be going in blind.” “Well, would you rather wait for whatever this thing is to wake up?” Jackson countered. “Miller, what do you say?” asked Anne. When should they go in? >Now >Morning Quote Link to comment

PPP 1,307
So, I'm going to be perfectly honest here: the next part will take a little while longer. Yes, even by my standards. I have just had a massive amount of work to do lately and haven't had a lot of free time. My schedule should clear up soon, but until then... Quote Link to comment
Xx4evRockerxX 702
Scope it out now, but potentially wait to slay until morning Quote Link to comment
PPP 1,307
Kept you waiting, huh? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Miller thought it over. It wasn’t like they would gain any more intel by waiting. “We’re going in now,” he declared. “We might be able to launch a surprise attack.” “Thank you, thank you,” said the old woman. “The dragon lives in a cave one mile north of here. I wish you the best of luck.” Flashlights drawn, the mercenaries headed out. The further they progressed, the more Miller noticed what looked like bones strewn about. After several minutes of foreboding silence, they came to a halt. In front of them were a series of rocky gulleys, with an opening in the side of one that was big enough to drive a bus through. “That’s gotta be its lair,” David whispered. “Got that right,” said Miller. He grabbed a grenade from his pouch. “Let’s see if we can’t nip this in the bud.” Miller chucked the grenade into the mouth of the cave and everyone took cover. A massive conflagration lit up the cave, sending chunks of rock flying everywhere. Then there was nothing but silence. “Ya think we got him?” Anne wondered aloud. That was when all hell broke loose. Something with the size and power of a freight train burst from the rubble. “Fall back!” yelled Miller. As the dust cleared, he got a good look at the massive shape. It towered over them on four sprawled legs. Every inch of it was covered with armor-like scales. An enormous box-shaped head with glowing eyes peered down at the mercenaries. A gaping maw spread open, revealing rows upon rows of jagged teeth. The monster reared back and let out a primal screech. “What the fuck is that?” cried Anne. “I’m guessing that’s the dragon,” said Jackson. “No shit,” Anne replied. “But what is it?” “Hmm,” Eve mused looking the monster over. “It appears to be a Komodo dragon, though nearly ten times the normal size due to mutation.” The mercs had run into some oversized mutated animals before, but this one outstripped them all. “Whatever it is, open fire!” Miller ordered. Miller drew his AK-74 and emptied a clip into the dragon’s chest. It had absolutely no effect. The beast simply hissed and charged the mercenaries. They scattered and continued shooting. “Fall back!” yelled Miller. They quickly took shelter behind a large boulder. “Our rifles aren’t working,” said David. “That thing’s hide is just too thick.” “We need a different approach,” said Jackson, “and fast.” “Maybe a different weapon,” added Eve. What should they do? >Aim for the eye >Use grenades >Use Eve’s railgun >Use Jackson’s special bolts (specify fire, ice, or electricity) >Other (please specify) Quote Link to comment

Maia 360
Reptiles are cold blooded, and as such, highly susceptible to low temperatures. Shoot it with Ice, it might be more effective Quote Link to comment
PPP 1,307
Miller thought it over as quickly as he could. If they couldn’t penetrate the dragon’s hide, then maybe… “Aim for the eyes!” he ordered. “Jackson, try your electric bolts!” “On it!” said Jackson, loading his crossbow. He dashed around to the side of the Komodo dragon and fired. However, the beast turned its head towards the source of the noise and movement at the last second. The bolt hit the side of its head and sent out an arc of electricity. The dragon screeched in pain but was not slowed down. It swiped at Jackson with its claws, who narrowly dodged. The rest of the mercenaries opened fire with their assault rifles, also going for the eyes. But it was no use. The dragon ducked and weaved its head as it continued the attack, preventing any of them from getting a clear shot. “Dammit!” yelled Miller. “This isn’t gonna work; it's too fast!" "So what's the plan now?" asked Anne. What should they do now? >Use grenades >Use Eve’s railgun >Use Jackson’s special bolts (specify fire or ice) >Other (please specify) Edited June 30, 2019 by PPP (see edit history) Quote Link to comment

PPP 1,307
“Eve!” called out Miller. “Your railgun! It might be able to penetrate the dragon’s hide!” “On it,” Eve replied. She materialised her railgun and fired. The dragon screeched in pain, and as it reeled away the mercs saw a patch of raw, red skin on its hide. “All right!” cheered David. “It looks like that did some damage. Hit it again!” “It needs time to cool down,” said Eve. “At least a minute or two.” “Until then, retreat!” Miller ordered. “Eve, look out!” The Komodo dragon was charging straight at her in a blind rage. Eve managed to dodge as its massive jaws snapped shut, but then the muscular tail whipped around, striking her from behind and sending her flying. “Eve!” cried Jackson, rushing to her side. “I-I’m okay,” said Eve weakly. “Where’s my railgun?” “It’s over there,” said Anne. “The others and I will draw its attention; grab it, quick!” The other mercenaries spread out and opened fire on the dragon. This still only served to annoy it, but that was all they needed at the moment. The beast snarled and hissed as Eve scrambled for her gun. “Got it!” Eve cried triumphantly “It’s still cooling, though.” “Any day now would be good!” shouted Anne. Suddenly, the Komodo dragon froze in its tracks. It opened its mouth in a wide gape and a guttural hacking noise emerged from its throat. “What the hell is it doing now?” asked Jackson. “Hairball?” David guessed. “Does it look like it has hair?” Anne replied. Suddenly, a torrent of viscous liquid erupted from the dragon’s mouth. The mercenaries dove for safety as the mystery substance splattered the ground. The puddles hissed and sizzled as they landed. “Corrosive venom!” shouted Miller. “Don’t let that stuff touch you!” Just then, Miller heard Eve’s railgun emit its familiar hum. She raised it and fired once again. Just like the last time, the dragon let out a pained screech but didn’t seem to be seriously injured. Instead, the mercs just seemed to be making it angry. The dragon lunged again, snapping its jaws in a wild frenzy. “This isn’t going to work,” Miller realized. “We have to put this thing down before it does some serious damage, and we ’re just not hurting it fast enough.” “And it looks like we’re running out of options,” Jackson added. What now? >Use grenades >Use Jackson’s special bolts (specify fire or ice) >Other (please specify) Quote Link to comment

Maia 360
Once again, reptiles are cold blooded and can be seriously damaged by a drop in temperature. Use the ice bolts. Quote Link to comment
PPP 1,307
Y'all should have listened to @Neeeeeeeko the first time. Leave it to the guy with the snake girl as his profile pic to realize reptiles are susceptible to low temperatures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Komodo dragon charged again; Miller barely managed to dodge. “Damn!” exclaimed Jackson. “How can something cold-blooded move that fast?” Miller was about to respond when the answer hit him. Honestly, he was embarrassed he hadn’t thought of it sooner. “Cold-blooded! That’s it! Jackson, use your ice bolts. The extreme cold should do a number on it.” “Got it,” Jackson replied, loading his crossbow. The ice bolt hit the dragon square in the chest. The mercenaries waited with bated breath. “Did it work?” whispered David. As if in response, the dragon hissed and charged them again. However, there was a noticeable lag in its movements. Jackson reloaded and fired again. The bolt soared through the air and landed in the beast’s gaping maw, where it exploded in a burst of freezing liquid. The Komodo dragon turned to face its assailant, but that simple action seemed to be exhausting it. With another ice bolt to the head, the dragons eyes slowly closed and it slumped down onto its stomach. “Nice work, Jackson,” said Miller, trying to catch his breath. “I don’t get it,” said Jackson. “Eve’s railgun couldn’t bring it down but simple ice bolts stop it?” “Well you see,” Eve explained, “as ectotherms, Komodo dragons and other reptiles are unable to-” “Spare us the science lecture!” Anne interrupted. “This thing still isn’t dead yet.” “Time to fix that,” Miller said grimly. With that, he laid all the C4 he had around the prone dragon. “Grenades out!” he ordered. The mercs retreated several paces, then tossed their frag grenades at the pile of plastic explosives. Then they ran like hell. The ensuing explosion lit up the night sky and nearly deafened them. As the smoke cleared, Miller looked back at the dragon. The massive corpse was blackened and barely identifiable. He sat down and breathed a sigh of relief. “Mercs,” he panted, “we did it.” “Hell yeah we did!” shouted Anne, slapping him on the back. “There’s nothing we can’t handle!” “It was rough,” David admitted, taking a seat next to Miller, “but we pulled through in the end.” “We are indeed a force to be reckoned with,” Eve concurred. “I have to admit,” said Jackson quietly, “we make a good team.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Mission complete! ------------------------------------------------------------- The mercenaries were still resting when they heard footsteps approaching. It was the old woman from the village. “We came as soon as we heard the explosion,” she explained. “Did you do it? Is that monster finally dead?” “See for yourself,” Miller replied. The old woman took one look at the corpse and let out a cheer. “The dragon is slain!” she cried. “We are saved!” She pulled an envelope from beneath her coat. “Please accept this on behalf of our village.” Miller took a look inside the envelope. It contained what was undoubtedly the biggest payment he’d ever received for a job. “We are forever in your debt,” said the woman, “but this should go some ways towards repaying it.” “Aw, it was nothing,” said Miller. “If you ever find yourself in need again, just give Miller’s Mercs a call.” “‘Miller’s Mercs?’” David repeated. “Is that what we’re calling ourselves now?” “No way,” said Anne. “Definitely not,” Jackson agreed. “Alright, alright,” said Miller. “It was just a suggestion…” ------------------------------------------- Back at the bar, the mercenaries once again toasted to their success. After several rounds, Eve took a look at the job board. “It does not look like anything has been posted recently,” she announced. “No job offers?” Jackson queried. “So what do we do now.” “I’ll tell you,” said Miller. “We got supplies, wheels, and a shitload of cash.” He sipped his beer. “What do we do now? Whatever we want.” THE END ------------------------------------------------------ Well, not quite the end. All the quests I had initially planned have been completed. I have a few more ideas, but I need to flesh them out. When I do continue this story, it'll probably be in a new thread. Huge thanks to everyone who participated in this, by the way. Hope to see you there! Quote Link to comment
