This is actually a common issue. This happens because the zip file is encoded in Japanese but Windows is trying to extract it with an English based decoder. What you have to do is set your locale to Japanese and restart your computer before you unzip the file so Windows uses the correct encoding.

Quick edit: since this game is made with the Japanese version of RPG Maker XP, you also have to run it while using either the Japanese locale or a locale emulator.

I think I've now unzip the file in Japanese but I still can't start the game I haven't any error message the game just doesn't start.

This may sound like a silly question but have you installed the RPG Maker XP RTP? All games made in any incarnation of the RPG Maker product require their respective RTPs to be installed before any game made in them can be played.

You can find the mentioned RTP right here. Make sure you click the button that says 'RPG Maker XP' before hitting download. ?

Okay. I had never seen that second error message before so I wanted to be sure.

Is there a file in the same directory as "Game.exe" named "Ver1.0からのセーブデータ引継ぎについて.txt"? If so then you did extract the game properly.

You also need to either change your system locale to Japanese prior to running the game or run the game using a locale emulator set to Japanese.

Instructions for Changing the System Locale

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings from the Start Menu
  2. Go to "Time & Language" > "Region & Language"
  3. On the right-hand sidebar, click "Administrative language settings"
  4. Click "Change system locale..."
  5. Say yes to the admin prompt
  6. Select "Japanese (Japan)" from the drop down list. This list is sorted alphabetically by language.
  7. Click "Restart now" when prompted

Windows 7

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Go to "Clock and Region" > "Region"
  3. Select the "Administrative" tab
  4. Continue from step 4 of the Windows 10 instructions

By the way, you must overwrite " Ver1.44への修正パッチ" in "mojikue ver1.44"

パッチの適用のしかた
このフォルダ内にあるフォルダやファイルを全てmojikue Ver1.4○の中に移動して上書きしてください。

Please help, I can't figure out how to manipulate the music files to get the dummy ones to get the game working. I know that I have to duplicate them and rename the Japanese files, but all of the BGM files are in numbers, not Japanese. If anyone has any pointers, or maybe a ZIP file containing the fixed BGM folder, that would be greatly appreciated.

@rangatan To extract the zip file properly, the program doing the unzipping needs to be using the Japanese locale for non-Unicode programs. On Windows 10 open Settings > Time & Language > Language and click "Administrative language settings" on the right sidebar. Then click "Change system locale", answer yes to the admin prompt, and select "Japanese" from the drop-down menu. You will be asked to restart your system for the changes to take effect. Once you've unzipped the file, you can change the locale back by following the same steps but choosing "English" instead.

Alternatively, I've very recently discovered a way to do this without bothering the system settings. I literally just figured out the bare minimum of what you need to get this to work not even 5 minutes ago so please tell me if it works for you as well.

  1. Install Locale Emulator 2.4.0.0 or higher. You can download from here.
  2. Obtain a 32-bit copy of 7-zip. There are two ways of doing this: installing the 32-bit x86 version of 7-zip (IDK if it will mess up existing installs yet) or install 7-ZipPortable from PortableApps.com.
  3. If you used the regular install, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\7-Zip\.  If you used the PortableApps version, go to (installation folder)\App\7-Zip\.
  4. Delete the Lang folder. This will prevent it from displaying all of the menus in Japanese.
  5. Select 7zFM.exe and right click.
  6. Hover over "Locale Emulator" and select "Run in Japanese"
  7. Extract your file using the interface.

Please tell me how that works for you.
