Gallery organization updates

Hello OmoOrg! I hope you all had an enjoyable New Year! Today I will highlight some recent changes to OmoOrg's gallery system.

Categorization changes

The biggest and most obvious change to the gallery system is we have done away with the old "Female/Male" centric categories.

Having tons of different sub-categories just for Male and Female content created a needless layer of complexity for our artists and gallery contributors. It also made accurately organizing content that featured both male and female participants impossible.

I have removed this system in favor of a simplified 4-category tag-based platform, which you can read about in more detail here:

Album prefixes

In place of the old category-based system, you can now instead identify predominantly Male/Female artwork albums via the gender prefix (the same prefix used for forum topics). In the future, you will be able to filter albums by male/female as well.

Navigational changes

Previously, whenever you clicked on an image inside a gallery album, it would open a lightbox to view the image.

This was incredibly annoying for albums containing comics and has been changed so it redirects you to the actual gallery image page instead, where you can freely use the arrow keys to navigate.

Image download button on gallery lightboxes

And lastly, a small addition: you can now download images directly from the lightbox (useful for images embedded into posts or other areas of the site).

...ok so now when I go into the gallery, there's no way for me to avoid seeing the content I don't want to see, and no great way to only show the content I DO want to see. It just puts all the male and female content together into one jumbled mess of thumbnails, with no ways of filtering it. I don't see how this is an improvement over the last system. A huge downgrade in viewer usability for a small upgrade in creator organization.

1. The previous system was not good for this either, especially considering there wasn't even a male/female subcategory for doujinshi/comics, which constitutes roughly half the gallery.

2. An extremely small percentage of the gallery is male content, and the gallery is almost entirely softcore content to begin with. I don't think it's a big deal having to scan through some softcore male omo in the gallery every now and then. Really. Open the Artist CG category and tell me what you find there that is just so bad you can't bear to see it in your face at all.

3. If you want a feed of content curated only to your interests, that's what the activity feed is for.

For example, it took me a whole 30 seconds to make a gallery feed for only female tagged content:

4. I do plan to implement support for tag filtering in the future. This upgrade is to set the foundation for that. For now, I don't think the current changes are going to kill you.

1. While the old system wasn't great, at the very least in the you could start by clicking the Female category, which was better than nothing. This system doesn't even have that (yet).

2. This argument is odd considering how softcore Messing content has been banished because someone MIGHT catch a glimpse of it while browsing the gallery, meanwhile furry content is currently unavoidably featured right at the top when you enter the gallery.

3. I'll admit I had not seen the activity feed before. Looks useful. Thanks for the tip. I have now made one that will allow me to circumvent the gallery, which still leaves the gallery itself kind of a mess. Also would be nice if the activity feed could show more than condensed does, but that's just me missing the thumbnail mode from the gallery probably.

4. That would definitely be nice, since as it stands the gallery is less user-friendly than it was. Filters could change that.

But to respond: you are correct, I won't die from the changes. Just like I didn't die when I needed to glimpse male furry art when I opened the gallery on my way to the female section. Yes, I can circumvent the gallery entirely by using activity feed. But that doesn't mean the system couldn't be improved so that people could use the gallery as well, and hide the content they don't want to look at. And it doesn't mean the current set of changes didn't have a negative impact on the usability of the gallery itself.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not angry over this, or trying to make this personal, so if it comes across that way I apologize. This is just feedback.

See, you're not a fan of furry content either. Should I have created a dedicated category just for furry content too, just because you don't like it?

The fact of the matter is you're going to end up seeing some content you're not a fan of. There's a limit to what we can reasonably do to mitigate that, especially in a gallery platform. We can't make the site perfect so you only see what you like everywhere you go.

The front-page of the gallery will encompass an array of works of different themes. The activity feeds are there for people that prefer not to deal with that.

I'm clearly not getting my point across, since I'm not saying you should do anything just because I don't like it. I didn't request furry be sent to a different section in the gallery at any point before the changes, or at any time. Same with any other content I dislike for that matter. I could, as you suggested, go into the artist CG section and locate art I can't stand to see, but I don't intend to call out anyone for bad art, nor do I intend to tell anyone they can't like things I don't like. I just pointed out how that argument is an odd one to use considering how another niche is treated on the site.

After this post I'll leave you be. I wasn't looking for a fight, and I apologize for making you feel I was attacking your choices. I worded things more aggressively than intended. All I was trying to do was give feedback. In the end I have absolutely no say in the matter: it's your site. But I must admit it hurts a bit when what I'm trying to say is reduced to "just because you don't like it" when I've had to deal with people in other threads say things I like don't belong on the site just because they don't want to see them.

So instead of improving tagging, it's now even harder to actually find what you want and avoid being bombarded by content you didn't want to see. As if the site weren't frustratingly heteronormative enough, it's now much more difficult to avoid getting tits shoved in my face since, by the way, "male" is part of the word "female" so will tend to come up even if labeled correctly.

No, it won't. Tags are an exact match, not partial match.

Not sure how these changes make the site more "heteronormative", but thanks for the feedback.
