Chapter Two

Bryan shifted the car back into drive and continued down the road, lips pursed in concentration. “It’s probably just a prank.”
Katie wasn’t convinced. “Yeah, probably.” She looked out her window at the passing trees. Maybe they shouldn’t have picked a place so secluded from the rest of civilization. “Do you really think we should stay?”
Bryan cleared his throat, then nodded. “Of course we should. Besides, we already paid for the hotel, and they don’t do refunds.”
Katie forced a smile onto her face. “Yeah, you’re right. That sign is totally a joke.” She laughed aloud. “I can’t believe I fell for it!”
Bryan started laughing too. “You should have seen your face!”
“My face?” Katie gasped. “You were just as scared as I was!”
Katie and Bryan shared another laugh, their earlier nervousness completely forgotten. A few minutes later, Bryan turned into a parking lot, and they pulled up to the entrance of their hotel. Katie looked out at the name of it: Golden Rapids B&B. This place was completely harmless.
“I’ll go check us in. You wait here, okay, love?” Bryan got out of the car and entered the hotel.
Katie smiled and rested her head against the window. Already she felt more relaxed than she had in months. This vacation was going to be great. She just wished it could be for more than four days. After a few minutes, Bryan reappeared, brandishing an old copper-plated key hanging from a thin, decorative rope. Bryan got back in the car and moved it into an empty parking stall.
“We’re in room eight-eighteen,” he said as he maneuvered the vehicle.
Katie smiled. “That’s ironic,” she said quietly.
Bryan put the car in park, shut off the engine, and turned to face Katie. “It is?”
“It also happens to be the date of our anniversary,” Katie replied, rolling her eyes.
Bryan smacked his forehead with his open palm. “I knew that.”
Katie chuckled and leaned forward, pressing her lips gently to Brian’s. “Of course you did,” she whispered against his mouth.
As Katie moved away, Bryan placed one hand on the back of her neck, holding her in place. “You won’t get away so easy,” he growled playfully.
Katie easily gave in, letting Bryan kiss her deeply for a long moment. Nearly breathless, Katie finally pushed him backward a bit. “I swear to every known deity, I will absolutely not make love to you in the car.” She raised one eyebrow at him, smirking.
“Alright, alright,” Bryan sighed.
They got out of the car, pulling their small bags from the backseat as they did. Bryan made sure to lock the doors before they entered the hotel. Inside the grand lobby, several comfy-looking armchairs sat around a lit fireplace. The fire crackled merrily as they walked past. Near the center of the large, high-ceilinged room stood an elaborate fountain. The sound of rushing water suddenly made Katie very aware of her growing need. When they walked past the fountain, Katie peered curiously at the water flowing through it. It was a nearly translucent golden color. Katie barely had time to ponder the mystery, though, for as they walked near the front desk, she squirmed uneasily.
“Excuse me,” she said to the kind-looking woman behind the counter, “do you have a restroom down here?”
The elderly woman smiled apologetically. “We don’t. I’m sorry.”
Katie nodded. “Thanks anyway.”
Bryan led the way to the elevator, and they rode up to the eighth floor in silence. Katie tried the whole time not to wiggle, but she very suddenly needed to pee. Standing up had reminded her that she had a bladder that had been slowly filling for the last five hours during their drive. She could barely stand the pressure. The elevator finally dinged, notifying them that they were at their stop. Katie dashed out first, quickly locating their room.
“Hurry, hurry, hurry,” she mumbled, dancing from foot to foot.
Bryan raised an eyebrow mockingly, and unlocked the door with exaggerated slowness. “Key . . . too . . . heavy . . . “ he choked out.
Katie stopped her dance very suddenly, and shoved both of her hands into her crotch, dropping her bag in the process. “Just open the door, Bryan!”
“As you wish,” he quoted, faking gallantry. He swung the door open wide, bowing at the waist and gesturing grandly to the dark interior.
Katie ran inside, flipping on every light as she did. Bryan reached down and picked up her forgotten bag, slowly following her into their room. He dropped both bags at the foot of the bed, then stood watching as Katie looked around the room.
Katie spun in a quick circle, then dashed to a door. She pulled it open, one hand still firmly holding her crotch, and found a closet where the safe, ironing board, and washing machine were located. She slammed the door and rushed across the room to another small door. It was a slightly larger closet for them to put their clothes in if they wished. Katie spun in a circle one last time, finally determining the truth.
“Why is there no bathroom in here?”
