Chapter One

Katie bounced up and down on her seat. “I’m so excited!”
Bryan chuckled, still keeping his focus on the road. “I know, love. We should be there in a few more minutes.”
Bryan and Katie were taking a much-needed vacation, just the two of them. Long, stressful days at work and meddling roommates made it difficult for the young couple to ever find alone time.
“I honestly can’t even remember the last time we took a weekend away,” Katie said, shifting in her seat to look at Bryan. “It’s been way too long.”
“Agreed. Let’s not wait this long next time.” Bryan’s forehead creased. “This road seems familiar, right Babe?”
Katie shook her head, confused. “No. We’ve never been to this town before. That’s why we picked it—it was so far out of the way that nobody would bother us.”
Bryan nodded slowly. “Probably just déjà vu.”
Katie didn’t say anything to Bryan, but earlier parts of their drive out here had seemed slightly familiar to her as well. Of course, it didn’t mean anything. She knew they’d never been to . . .
“Hey, what’s the name of this town again?” Katie remembered that it was something strange, but the name wasn’t coming to mind.
Brian pulled his cell phone from his pocket and handed it to Katie. “Look in my email,” he said. “It’s the first one, I think.”
Katie quickly maneuvered to the right place and read through the email. “It’s called Golden Rapids.” She gave Bryan his phone back. “What a peculiar name.”
“I wonder what the name means,” Bryan mused.
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, typically, small towns are named after a big feature or attraction, or sometimes an important historical event or pastime.”
Katie smiled. It was typically nerdy of Bryan to spout out random facts that were next to useless. “That’s interesting.”
“What do you think the name refers to?” Bryan glanced at Katie.
“It’s probably just a reference to some river or something,” Katie said, shrugging. “It doesn’t matter.”
Bryan didn’t reply. Instead he pointed out the windshield to a small sign on the side of the road. It read, “Golden Rapids, population: 361.”
Katie’s eyes grew wide and an excited smile broke across her face. “We’re here!”
Bryan continued to focus on the stretch of empty road they travelled down. After a couple more miles, they came upon a large sign marking the official entrance to the town. It was decorated nicely, with stone veneer and hand-painted cursive words. Bryan glanced at the sign, ready to drive past it, when he comprehended what it said. He screeched to a halt in the middle of the road and stared at the sign, perplexed.
Katie looked at him. “Why did you do that?”
Bryan slowly pointed to the sign. “That’s why.”
Katie turned her head and looked out the window. When she read the words, her jaw dropped in surprise. “What does it mean?”
Bryan shook his head. “I have no idea.”
The sign read, “You’ve actually been here before. We just made sure you forgot.”
